“Big bets, or large, philanthropic donations, have since become a persistent topic of conversation in humanitarian circles, and attracted both unbridled optimism and deep skepticism.”  

In the June issue of Alliance Magazine’s special feature, guest editors Gabrielle Fitzgerald (Founder & CEO, Panorama) and Ashif Shaikh (Co-Founder, People’s Courage International) explore how the meaning of a big bet has evolved. Once considered a major milestone, receiving a big bet is now just the starting point in the long journey toward solving complex, large-scale challenges.  

Still, many organizations continue to face the same fundamental struggle: securing sustainable funding. As governments slash domestic service budgets and reduce foreign aid, traditional pathways to systems change, often built on public sector partnerships, are narrowing.  

It will take new ways of working—and many more big bets from a broader base of funders—to fill the gap.
